AbstractPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kualitas proses dan kualitas hasil keterampilan menulis karangan argumentatif melalui penilaian portofolio siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Mandau. Metode yang digunakan penelitian tindakan kelas terdiri atas dua siklus, setiap siklus meliputi tiga tahap: perencanaan, tindakan dan observasi, refleksi. Terjadinya  peningkatan kualitas proses karena adanya keterlibatan peserta didik dalam proses pembelajaran, peserta didik lebih bersemangat dalam mengikuti pembelajaran, peserta didik memiliki sikap positif terhadap pembelajaran menulis, dan lebih aktif bertanya tentang menulis. Peningkatan kualitas hasil melalui penilaian portofolio juga menunjukkan peningkatan pada pratindakan yang memperoleh rata-rata nilai 64,36: siklus I diperoleh rata-rata nilai 67,90 siklus II diperoleh rata-rata nilai 73,48 dan pascatindakan diperoleh rata-rata nilai 80,03.  Portfolio assessment to improve the writing skills of argumentative essays  Abstract This study aimed at improving the tenth grade students’ argumentative essay writing skills in the process and result of writing teaching and learning through portfolio assessment at SMAN 1 Mandau. Methods used classroom action research consisted of two cycles with three steps in each cycle: planning, acting and observing, reflecting. The improvement of process quality because there's involvement of students in the learning process, students are more enthusiast during the learning process, students have a positive attitude towards writing study, and more active to ask about writing. Moreover, the students’ writing scores also increased. It could be seen from the improvement on the students’ mean scores from 64,36 to 80,03. The mean score in cycle 1 was 67,90, while in cycle 2 was 73,48.
