Abstract:

Mapping research of globalization and commercialization in professional football with Bibliometric analysis

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the research development of globalization and commercialization of professional football and analyze the publication trends in the Scopus database. Visualization maps and content analysis were analyzed using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny. This analysis used 187 documents/articles published in the Scopus database in the time span of 1989-2023. The results showed that social science emerged as the most prominent subject area, with the United Kingdom (UK) as the most prolific country and the United States with the highest h-index. Finally, Finally, I identified the research themes of labor migration, sponsorship, food marketing, finance, brand strategy, and sports business as central topics in this research. These findings suggest that despite significant progress in this domain, there is still much work to be done, especially in unexplored areas such as stakeholders, social media, and women's football. The conclusion of bibliometric research can provide a comprehensive global perspective and facilitate the compilation of data for the development of robust theory and practice on key topics in the globalization and commercialization of professional football. Future research with varied databases is suggested to obtain more comprehensive data.
